Live Edge Bar/ Desk Build
This was my recent transformation of the “office” area of the loft. We had really only one place to put a desk, but it was on a large wall in an awkward location that was close to the kitchen. I decided to do a hybrid of a desk/bar in exchange for the current eye sore. I used live edge cedar due to it’s affordability and unique look.
**Please note: By no means am I a professional wood worker. I have no prior experience so bare with me!
All Materials Used
- Slabs of wood (I used two pieces of live edge cedar)
- Orbital sander
- Medium and high grit sandpaper (square sheets for hand sanding and sanding discs for orbital sander)
- 1 small can of Spar Urethane (brand used: Miniwax, finish: satin)
- Synthetic bristle brush
- 2 part epoxy (if needed)
- Masking tape (if needed)
- Heavy duty shelf brackets (they should be close to the width of the wood). Here are the ones I used.
- Stud finder
- Electric drill
- Leveler tool
- Screws
Tips and Recommendations
- Use 100-180 grit sandpaper prior to wood finish
- Use a synthetic bristle brush for applying spar urethane finish.
- Lightly sand (200-320 grit) between coats of spar urethane for smooth/ best results.
- Be sure to mask bottom side of cracks when filling with epoxy. Obviously, it will seep through instead of drying within the wood.
